The < HTML Gallery > is a collection of graffanimation works generated and written in html. Created using code in editors like "Brackets," uploaded via FTP to the host server. First piece: early September 2016, New York City.
The HTML Gallery is a collection of new graffanimation works generated and organized as html files. The pieces are created by writing code in html editors — raw, direct, CSS-free executions of digital graffiti aesthetics using only the fundamental building blocks of the web: <table>, <div>, <img>, <p>. Each file is a unique document in the history of net art, URL art, and HTML art — and their synthesis into something new. Click the hyperlinks below for the redirection experience.
These pieces were not designed in Photoshop or Illustrator. They were written — character by character, tag by tag, in a code editor, the same way graffiti is written letter by letter on a wall. The medium is the message: HTML as mark-making.
The <table> tag was never meant for art. Neither was a subway car. SLOW uses what's available. The table cell becomes a color field. The <img src> becomes a portal to the networked world. The entire piece is alive only as long as the URLs resolve.
This is net art in the truest sense — URL-dependent, internet co-dependent, alive in the browser, mortal like everything else.
